We are thrilled to announce that Murch Elementary School, a District of Columbia Public School and one of our standout projects, will be featured in the forthcoming book, Creating the Regenerative School. This honor highlights our dedication to innovative and sustainable educational design.

At Hord Coplan Macht, we believe in designing spaces that serve the present needs of learners and educators and pave the way for a sustainable future. Murch Elementary School is a testament to this philosophy. Through thoughtful design and a commitment to environmental stewardship, we have designed a learning environment that enhances educational outcomes and ecological responsibility.

Creating the Regenerative School showcases the latest research in combination with exemplary case studies demonstrating how we can design healthy, resilient, and restorative places of learning for grades ECE through 12. The book highlights examples that demonstrate that exploration, delving into the latest developments, challenges, and opportunities in the quest to create sustainable, regenerative places of learning that not only adapt to change but actively contribute to the well-being of individuals and the planet.


Extensive research, communications, interviews, and data analysis were utilized in compiling the book, which aims to share knowledge and insights vital to creating healthy, regenerative ECE-12 learning environments in all manner of contexts. Outcomes for each project will be profiled in the form of post-occupancy data, certifications received, and client perspectives. We are honored that Murch Elementary School is recognized as a model of this approach.

Our work at Murch Elementary School included a comprehensive renovation and expansion that respected the historic character of the existing building while integrating modern, eco-friendly features. The project achieved LEED Gold certification, a testament to our unwavering commitment to high-performance green building standards. Key features include:

  • Energy Efficiency: Advanced heating, cooling, and lighting systems that reduce energy consumption and operational costs.
  • Sustainable Materials: Use of recycled and locally sourced materials to minimize environmental impact.
  • Healthy Learning Environments: Incorporation of natural light, improved air quality, and acoustical design to enhance student well-being and performance.
  • Community Engagement: Collaboration with local stakeholders to ensure the school meets the needs of its community and serves as a hub for local activities.
