Andrew G. Clark Building Renovation & Addition

As part of a design-build team with Haselden Construction, Hord Coplan Macht (HCM) led the programming and design for the transformation of one of Colorado State University’s most heavily used academic buildings—the Andrew G. Clark Building. Originally constructed in 1967, the Clark Building was designed as a series of wings connected by a central bridge and had seen only minor updates over the decades.

With over 90% of CSU students taking at least one class in the Clark Building during their academic careers, the need for modernization was clear. The design process began with nearly a year of interactive programming, including workshops and design charrettes with the College of Liberal Arts. This collaborative effort led to a pivotal decision: demolish the aging bridge between the A- and B-Wings, replace the B-Wing with a new 90,000-sf addition, and fully renovate the A-Wing to support contemporary learning.

The reimagined Clark Building will become a light-filled, interdisciplinary academic hub—honoring the building’s mid-century character while meeting the evolving needs of 21st-century students and educators. HCM’s vision was shaped by the voices of faculty, students (including representatives from the College of Liberal Arts council), and alumni, all committed to preserving the “Clark character” and the building’s role in the academic life of the campus.

Substantial completion is anticipated in late 2026, with the goal of reopening the new B-Wing and renovated A-Wing for the Fall 2027 semester.
