HCM was selected to do a Master Plan to evaluate all of the buildings in the District. At the conclusion of the facilities assessment, the design team concluded that the high school infrastructure was not capable of meeting the growing needs of the district. Due to the design of the current facilities, students were required to walk between multiple buildings each day for various services, creating student safety concerns. Several design solutions were presented to the school board and in community meetings, providing various ways to solve the district’s concerns. The final master plan design was a collaborative effort with the district, design team, community members and students. After a successful bond elections, the design team began the execution of the master plan, working closely with the District and A&P Construction.
The overall goal for Wiggins School District is to unify the existing campus, allowing the students to participate in school activities in a secure and inviting environment. The design of the new middle & high school classroom addition includes a clear main entry into the building, establishing the front door to the entire campus. The classrooms are oriented to optimize daylighting, providing educational spaces with advanced technologies for instruction, and break out spaces for small group learning. By flipping the existing stage opening, the addition also incorporates a new shared theatre and band classroom. Additional athletic facilities including an auxiliary gym with wrestling room, along with track and field improvements, support the growing sports program throughout the district. The shape of the additions around the Event Center form a protected courtyard for outdoor activities.
