As part of the replacement hospital for the Western Maryland Health System, Hord Coplan Macht designed a new pathology laboratory department, that included a blood bank, to serve regional phlebotomy centers in addition to the new facility. This laboratory included the relocation of a 40 foot chemistry automation line, the implementation of a new automated hematology line, three grossing stations with cryostats, histology processing area, blood bank, microbiology, morgue (outside of department) and administrative functions.
The blood bank was located adjacent to the primary entrance for rapid access by the operating room staff for stat blood needs. The design of this space utilized the open lab concept with low benches and clear sight lines for staff observation and management during night shifts.
