University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center, Ambulatory Care Center

Consolidating on-campus outpatient services, this new 100,000 sf, five-story building links the hospital to an existing parking garage and houses key outpatient clinics for vascular, diabetes, neurology, and orthopedics practices.

Incorporating extensive input from outpatient clinical staff and hospital leadership, the design establishes standards for planning, operations, and experience. The layout accommodates a range of patient and staff spaces, as many people pass through the building while traveling between the garage and the hospital. In this way, the building serves as both a connection and a destination.

The exterior design marries the warmth of terra cotta panels with the clean, crisp lines of a contemporary aesthetic to create a modern anchor to this older portion of the UMBWMC campus. An all-glass entry tower and drive-under porte cochere easily mark the entry to the building for those approaching from any direction.

A new facility-owned pharmacy hosts an off-hour prescription dispenser to serve patients and employees, allowing easier access to prescribed meds before discharge. Additionally, amenities and support space on the top floor include a conference space with capacity for 170, as well as an employee gym, Epic classroom, and simulation lab.
