The Rylan is a multi-family residential building in Tysons, Virginia located within walking distance to the McLean Metro Station and the Silver Line extension from Washington, DC. The Rylan is part of a multi-block masterplan that HCM was commissioned to envision for several parcels of future development walkable to the metro and the growing presence and investment of corporate headquarters in the area. The masterplan was created to transform a vehicular driven suburban environment into a vibrant, pedestrian oriented destination with a mix of uses designed to better connect the community and enrich the unique identity of the area.
The style and scale of the building is composed into two distinct architectural languages. The main residential entry court and a contemporary metal clad façade are uniquely oriented to the adjacent primary street and pedestrian connection to the metro. A light-colored cantilevered volume floats above a grounded masonry base that responds to the topography of the site. Inset balconies and the use of warm accent panels provide wall depth and richness to the signature façade. The balance of the building composition is made up of a more subdued material palette with a mix of warm masonry tones, neutral panel elements and accents.
The lobby entry is on axis with a gracious interior residential amenity program with visual transparency to the primary pool-courtyard beyond. The exterior connection is further enhanced with a terraced exterior landscape punctuated with different outdoor spaces and amenities which step down to Scott’s Run Nature Preserve and the public recreation trail across the street. A secondary courtyard provides a more private set of spaces with a flexible central lawn for community gatherings.
The Rylan is a 5 over 2 Type IIIA podium-style building with a 7-story wrapped precast parking garage.
