Erickson Senior Living acquired the 33-acre Marriott International Headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland to redevelop into a new urban continuing care retirement community with more than 1,200 units of independent living, assisted living, memory care and skilled care.
The campus is being designed and built in phases. Hord Coplan Macht is currently completing design for phase 1, which includes two 12 story IL residential high-rise buildings, a parking garage and the 5,000 sf Marketing Center, which serves as the “welcome kiosk” (as opposed to a gatehouse) and will become a permanent part of the community commons.
The configuration of the buildings on this campus will maximize views from living units while minimizing distances to commons spaces and amenities. Independent living buildings will have a mix of unit types, ranging from single bedrooms to two-bedroom units with dens or sunrooms, both having access to outdoor space. All residential buildings will be multi-story over covered parking, with dining options and amenities on the ground level, including a fitness center and an indoor pool.
The future phases will include assisted living, with a mix of two-bedroom suites, studios, and one-bedroom suites, and their own associated dining, activities spaces, and services. The proposed redevelopment also includes community amenities—including a civic green, walking and biking trails around the perimeter, and pedestrian-friendly upgrades along the main road.
