MyMichigan Medical Center, Alpena Inpatient and Surgical Expansion & Renovation

Following an evaluation of the hospital’s existing 10-year master facility plan, HCM re-phased the implementation to incorporate a surgical floor into a planned inpatient expansion to avoid a costly and disruptive renovation-in-place of surgical services.

The new 105,000 sf building serves as a new main entrance to the hospital and improves the patient experience by replacing the shared patient rooms with private rooms. The first floor houses the main patient entrance and the new surgical suite. The two patient floors provide 60 beds for women’s, med/surg, critical care, and intermediate care patients.

The patient floors feature a hybrid nursing model, using both alcoves near the patient rooms and central nurse stations distributed on the floor. Outboard patient toilets provide maximum views and accessibility for staff into the patient rooms.

HCM collaborated with a local architect, Three Rivers Design, who was responsible for the construction documents and administration portion of the project.
