Kentlands Market Square Redevelopment

Hord Coplan Macht was commissioned to reposition the site design, public spaces and streetscape for the Kentlands Market Square shopping center located in Gaithersburg, MD. The new Kentlands Market Square is a redevelopment of an underutilized parking lot with new retail at the ground floor of a multi-level apartment building with integral structured parking. The addition of apartment dwellers and new retail will increase the livability of the Kentlands Market Square, improve the visibility for the new retailers, create an appealing streetscape and offer residential living to support a more sustainable and walkable mixed-use center.

Expanded sidewalks along Commerce Square Place will be defined by new retail at the ground floor of the new building. The expanded sidewalk will have ample room for café seating, streets trees and street furnishings. The primary street entrance to the apartment residential building is located on Center Point Way. The site plan includes pedestrian connections to the new Paseo located to the west as well access to the parking garage to serve retail patrons. Modifications to Commerce Square Place and Center Point Way include new sidewalks, street trees, street lighting and on-street parking. The residents of the apartments will provide an opportunity to enhance foot traffic to other existing business and walkable neighborhood destinations fostering a more vital, safe and lively place.
