Johnson & Wales has one of the nation’s leading culinary and hospitality management programs and the campus design reflects an upbeat blend of a traditional university feel and modern hospitality spaces, spread across this campus with thirteen buildings.
Since 1999, Hord Coplan Macht has teamed with Johnson & Wales University in Denver to design campus spaces that attract students and celebrate their Rocky Mountain location. New buildings, additions and many interior renovation projects have successfully tailored JWU’s facilities to meet the academic and cultural guidelines set forth in the University’s mission statement. HCM has designed academic spaces including traditional and active learning classrooms, a lecture-style demonstration kitchen and interactive culinary teaching labs. The quality of student life is a priority for Johnson & Wales and HCM has been able to continually refresh residence halls and student spaces with low cost, high impact design that appeals to the young demographic of incoming students. New residence hall layouts and programming is continually being tested on campus, to stay competitive with off-campus housing.
Newly renovated Centennial Hall, the campus Student Center, opened in 2015 and combines a one-stop student service approach, event spaces, administrative offices, classrooms and a late night café. Hord Coplan Macht worked with Johnson & Wales to renovate Founders Hall into a 162-bed residence hall. Founders Hall was originally built as a residence hall in the collegiate Gothic-style for Colorado Women’s College. Until recently, it has been used mostly as office and student activity space. The growing need to expand its on-campus housing options has prompted Johnson & Wales to revert the building’s use back to student housing.
HCM also worked on the 47,000 sf Wildcat Center, which is home to the residential dining facility for campus residents. The Culinary Arts program uses teaching labs that look and act like real working restaurants so that students can rotate through shifts of food preparation and restaurant service.
