East Norbeck Park Landscape Architecture

East Norbeck Park is a 24-acre local park in Olney, Maryland featuring active recreation facilities including: ball fields, basketball, soccer and tennis courts, play areas and walking trails.  A stone and timber park structure includes a comfort station and picnic pavilion.  Stone was also used on a new vehicular bridge crossing an on-site stream.  A pedestrian bridge also spans the stream, providing access to walking trails through a native grass meadow.

Educational / interpretive signage illustrates the function of the bioretention areas, which are carefully integrated into the play area.  Other storm water improvements include permeable paver in the parking areas.  Significant native plantings meet reforestation requirements, while also providing a visual buffer to the adjacent highway, work as a stream buffer, wildlife habitat and comfortable park settings.  The park amenities are fully accessible.

As the lead Landscape Architect, Hord Coplan Macht managed a multidisciplinary team, including our inhouse architects as well as subconsultants including civil engineers, structural and MEP engineers and cost estimators.  HCM provided final site design and site construction documents in accordance with a master plan created by the Maryland National Capital Parks and Planning Commission (MNCPPC).
