HCM designed a new surgical department for Mercy Medical Center to occupy approximately 43,000 sf of shell space within their new Bunting Building. The department features eight new universal ORs at 700 sf each that are sized to handle general or specialty surgery cases. The prep/recovery area features 23 fully private rooms that swing between prep and outpatient recovery, and a 12-bed PACU with two isolation rooms.
The Bunting Surgical Suite was specifically designed for maximum flexibility. Oversized equipment storage rooms at the north and south end of the clean core are designed to be converted into three additional future OR’s. Building services were sized to accommodate these additional rooms and brought to the edge of the rooms to minimize future construction disruptions. Additional prep, PACU, and recovery volumes were included in the sizing of those departments. Each room will have direct access to the sterile core for stocking and case cart delivery.
The surgical project includes a 4,000 sf expansion to Central Sterile Processing, including an additional washer, additional steam sterilizers, additional pack and prep tables and storage space that will support the needs of the ORs.
