The Calvert School continues to explore ways to enhance and fully support their mission. Acknowledging the continued interest in wellness and fitness and responding to a growing demand for squash facilities, the school once again is partnering with HCM to design their new 29,000 SF Athletic Center. This new $8.5M facility includes 10 singles squash courts, new indoor turf field along with a fitness room along with support facilities.
HCM was first engaged to assist Calvert in reimagining the facility. An earlier design proved to be too costly, allowing Calvert the opportunity to re-think the project and how it sits on their campus. HCM worked with Calvert to find the optimal location for the new center, while also repositioning an adjacent athletic field into some recently acquired property.
HCM then worked closely with Calvert and Mullan Construction, the Construction Manager, to refine the facility design to work within Calvert’s budget and schedule needs. This modified Integrated Project Delivery process resulted in a design approach that will meet Calvert’s needs while responding to a range of factors.
The facility’s design draws inspiration for the existing context found on Calvert’s campus, while also creating an expressive appearance consistent with the building’s purpose. The facility is open for the Fall 2022 school year.
