Baltimore Medical System brings high quality healthcare, educational programs, and wellness opportunities to under-served communities. The existing BMS clinic in this neighborhood had outgrown its space, and the HCM-designed renovation project increases clinical capacity to support the client’s mission of improving access to care.
Hord Coplan Macht renovated an existing retail space into a multidisciplinary outpatient medical clinic. Working collaboratively with BMS leadership, the design team analyzed both clinical workflows and design standards and details to maximize the efficiency and efficacy of the space. Since the landlord was renovating the facade of the strip center at the same time we were designing the clinic, we coordinated what was needed by BMS, what would be included as part of the core and shell upgrades, and what would be provided by the tenant.
A review of the preliminary space plan identified opportunities for improvement, including increasing the size of the exam rooms, relocating the staff support spaces, resizing and reconfiguring the waiting room to accommodate potentially infectious patients, providing additional access/egress route in the Behavioral Health area in case of a disturbed patient, and identifying additional building support spaces.
The new clinic includes 30 exam rooms for primary care, pediatrics, women’s care, and behavioral health, as well as a retail pharmacy for improved patient convenience. Designed to maximize efficiency, the plan positions staff work areas to provide oversight of the exam rooms.
