In May 2015, ground broke for the Hord Coplan Macht-designed Stargate School Campus serving primary and secondary students, setting Stargate on the path to become the only Charter School Campus within Colorado. This April, Stargate reached out to Hord Coplan Macht to speak on design and sustainability in the built environment. The students and HCM’s Ryan Sand, a landscape architect, began a conversation to determine specific design objectives, approach them in a methodical/creative way, and achieve them at a realistic level (budget and material references); all with the goal of implementing their own built outdoor classroom on their new school campus.
The project was wrapped up through a class room presentation as students presented their objectives, designs and models. The students continually impressed Ryan by their “consideration of thought of design and materials and engaging questions to their very own peers (how can someone in a wheel chair access this space, what is the maintenance plan for your design, etc.). Through school engagement such as this, we find a sense of pride to promote educational design through our work, as well as through hands-on experience with the students whose schools we build.
Well Done Stargate Students!
“Thank you for coming to work with my students and provide feedback on their Problem-Based Learning presentations. Your involvement allowed them to see the connection and impact their outdoor classrooms can have in the “real world”. By supporting the students and encouraging them through the design process, you have given them a taste into how exciting and complicated the world of design can be!”
