This presentation was part of the Green Building Institute's Monthly Green Building Network Meeting. Lisa Ferretto was part of the "Architect's Panel." Lisa discussed what "green" is and also several of Hord Coplan Macht's "green" and LEED projects including Friends Community School, Century Engineering Headquarters and adaptive reuse projects in Baltimore City.

Large Scale Straw Bale Design and Construction
HCM's Paul Dibos, LEED AP, project architect, and Zolna Russell, RLA, ASLA, LEED AP, landscape architect presented Large Scale Straw Bale Design and Construction: Friends Community School Case Study at U.S. Green Building Council's Greenbuild Conference 2008 in October. This presentation highlighted the strategies used to create one of the world's largest straw bale structures, and the positive effects this building will have on the environment and the students who are taught through its design. Geared toward Friends' "our place in the world" philosophy, HCM created a school environment that is conducive to learning, environmentally sustainable, and met and exceeded the expectations of school stakeholders. Paul's presentation how connecting environmental awareness and conservation of natural resources with the school's design-through LEED certified requirements, sustainable design techniques, and school program planning-these goals were achieve upon its completion.

HCM hosted reknowned civil engineer Judy Nitsch in our offices as part of our continuing education series. Judy spoke about Sustainable Sites. She demonstrated how stormwater management and other sustainable strategies can be beautifully integrated into the landscape by sharing her experience on several different project types including universities, multi-family housing, recreation and institutional projects. Judy Nitsch is President of Nitsch Engineering in Boston, MA. She has more than 30 years experience consulting for and designing the sustainable sites aspects of award winning green building projects. Her projects include Yale University, the University of Virginia, Princeton University as well as other commercial and institutional clients.

Green 101 - International Builders Show Feb. 2008
Ed Hord, FAIA, Senior Principal of Hord Coplan Macht, Inc. presents an informative overview of sustainable design practices in housing. Three case studies are presented showing relative costs of going green. Over 700 people signed up for this session and it was one of the top three sessions for the entire 2008 International Builders Show.

A Study in Green Building- Century Engineering
Monica Robertson, a senior associate at Hord Coplan Macht, presented a case study of HCM's Century Engineering Corporate Headquarters project. Co-presenters included Francis Smyth, CEO of Century Engineering, Mark Senula, with Whiting-Turner and Ken Doyle with ConServe. This building achieved a LEED NC Gold rating from the US Green Building Council. It is the highest rated project in Baltimore and has also been recognized by the AIA and IFMA.
