You Have More Space than You Think: Expanding Without Building
Hord Coplan Macht Principals Tom Spies and Peter Winebrenner, along with Indian Creek School, Head of School Rick Branson, spoke at the 2013 National Business Officers Association Annual Meeting. Their presentation addressed for 21st Century school can do more with less.
For all of the challenges and hurdles the “new normal” has created, the need to do more with less has also created opportunities for schools to become leaner and meaner – more efficient and effective. As schools evolve and continue to evaluate and adopt new teaching and learning strategies, there is a real opportunity to create and alter the learning spaces in a more efficient manner. Practically speaking, certain 21st-century learning strategies can actually reduce the need for instructional and support space, allowing schools to increase their capacity without adding and maintaining expensive square footage.
This session will examined several key learning strategies that are transforming the educational experience. Concepts such as blended learning, the flipped classroom, schools without walls and others were discussed. The session then looked at examples of how different physical environments have responded to these teaching and learning strategies. Opportunities to actually reduce space needs, or increase programs and/or enrollment without adding new space were examined.
