Hord Coplan Macht led the team for the renovation and expansion of the SECU Arena at Towson University. The SECU Arena, formerly known as the Towson Center, is a multi-use indoor arena facility, includes approximately 55,000 sf of renovated space and 170,000 sf of new expansion. The University projects a 25% increase in enrollment in the next decade and is also undergoing a transformation in its nature from a local institution with a large commuter population to a traditional four-year college with regional stature. This change demanded a comprehensive program of improvement in the athletic facilities for its Division I teams.
The expanded and renovated arena acts as a physical and visual connection between the east and north areas of the campus. It provides a greater seating capacity, a new practice facility multiple flexible program spaces, an upgraded technology system, and an innovative and spacious lobby. The vitality in the athletic program is branded into the signature arena featuring tiger stripes in the basketball court and increased opportunities for sponsorship.
SECU Arena is certified LEED Gold NC v2.2. Sustainable Strategies include: Comprehensive Transportation Management Plan; 49% modeled water use reduction; 23% modeled energy use reduction; water efficient landscaping; reflective roof; minimum 75% construction waste management, 20% recycled content, and 20% regional materials.
