Based on the rapid growth of the St. Joseph Medical Center’s outpatient cancer program and the sudden availability of 9,000 sf adjacent to the existing Cancer Institute, SJMC sought to renovate and expand their program. This is a multi-phase project to expand the services offered by the Infusion department and the women’s health center including breast cancer treatment space and imaging space.
The overarching project goal was to relieve the strain of an increasing number of patients while maintaining the peaceful, healing environment of the existing space. The Breast Center was expanded to accommodate two additional oncologists with three new exam rooms and associated office spaces. The Imaging suite was relocated and more than doubled in size to reduce waiting times and consolidate multiple service points on the campus.
The biggest challenge to the project was to provide the highest possible level of patient care during an expansion and renovation in place.
The project was phased into three primary phases to ensure that there was never a reduction in the available patient care space. Additionally, all work in the private garden atrium was done completely at night to avoid the strain of construction noise on patients who typically sit through 3 to 4 hour infusion sessions multiple times a week.
