Not Hush Hush Anymore – Libraries transform to learning commons

“Today, school libraries are undergoing a transformation — becoming not just a place to house resources but one in which to create meaning from them. Technology is playing a large role in this change, as virtually every student has the potential to carry a global library on his or her device. With this change, the role of the library has become more central to the learning environment. In the evolution from library to learning commons, we are eliminating the formal, “whispering only,” reputation that has long been associated with libraries and instead bringing together the best of physical (books) and digital to support self-directed learning in a rich, interactive environment.”

Hord Coplan Macht Pushes Performance at CSU

For some institutions, building “sustainably” means doing the bare minimum—checking the boxes of government or in-house requirements and then moving on.

Such was not the case at Colorado State University, where campus officials aspired to a higher standard for the new Suzanne and Walter Scott, Jr. Bioengineering Building. Though mandated by state law to achieve LEED Gold on new construction, the dean urged the architects—design architect RATIO Architects and architect of record Hord Coplan Macht —to aim for Platinum.

Look into the gardens of Baltimore’s landscape architects

ph-mg-cl-look-into-the-gardens-of-baltimores-l-001Hord Coplan Macht’s founding partner Carol Macht is featured in the Baltimore Sun in a story about her design of her own home’s landscape and garden.

“At the home of Carol Macht and her surgeon husband, the land’s the thing. In 1981, when they moved to a spacious 1880s Victorian house in Ruxton, the acre around it had a small concrete pad for a patio, an old crabapple tree beside it, three black walnut trees and a steep slope.”

“Macht’s design concept has been simple: Carving out levels from a slope to create spaces and to do it in a way that fit with the site and existing trees to look as if it had always been that way”

Baltimore architecture firm looks to Rockies

SPHCMFeatured on the front page of the Baltimore Sun business section, the following article chronicles Hord Copan Macht’s growth over the past 37 years and our recent merger with SlaterPaull.

“A Baltimore architecture firm founded in 1977 by two Park School graduates and a friend has nearly doubled in size in the last two years, making its most ambitious bid for greater reach last month when it announced the expansion of its footprint to Colorado.

In two years, Hord Coplan Macht has opened an office in Alexandria, Va., wooed top talent to its ranks, and worked to merge with smaller Denver-based SlaterPaull.”
