Hord Coplan Macht (HCM) is proud to announce that its design of the new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Medstar Franklin Square Medical Center was named a finalist in the  National Patient and Family Centered NICU Design Competition.  Sponsored by The Institute for Patient-Centered Design, the award program recognizes spaces that facilitate healing and encourage patient and family participation. Hord Coplan Macht’s design was honored to receive second place, among entrants from across the industry, in this international competition.

Through a commitment to patient and family-centered care, Medstar Franklin Square Medical Center’s new, 20-bed, single-patient-room NICU will provide a space that promotes care, family participation, and staff satisfaction. In this family-centered care environment, the balance of visibility and privacy are essential for the well-being of the newborn and family, and for responsiveness of the staff. At the same time, the design fosters a feeling of community among patients’ families through the creation of informal gathering zones and shared resource areas.

The design of the NICU creates defined yet overlapping zones for caregivers and families centered on the infant. By bringing the caregiver and family together as an individualized unit, staff need not feel as if they are imposing on families who are attempting to maintain a sense of normalcy during a very stressful time.

Scheduled to open in spring 2015, the new NICU promises to be a nurturing center of excellence where the youngest and most vulnerable patients can heal surrounded by the loving care of their families.
