Hord Coplan Macht Project Featured in National Building Museum Exhibit
Hord Coplan Macht is pleased to announce that its recent project at Barrie School, in Silver Spring, MD is being included in the first-ever museum exhibition dedicated to the greening of American schools. Featuring exemplary projects from new construction, to rehabs, to modular classrooms, the exhibition will survey the extraordinary breadth of green school design in the United States through sample building materials, photographs, video, green products and full scale building mock-ups.
HCM’s featured project is Barrie School’s Learning Studio and Research Learning Lab, two state-of-the-art buildings that embrace a new paradigm in educational delivery, where creative and analytical problem solving, complex communication, leadership and team work, digital and quantitative literacy, adaptability, integrity and most important, global perspectives are emphasized.
Contrasting the “one-size-fits-all” approach to education prevalent in the 20th century, the new, 5,800 sf facilities at Barrie physically manifest the school’s dynamic curriculum and focus on the needs of students as individuals. Through a highly flexible learning environment, the Learning Studio and Research Learning Lab support opportunities for creativity, collaboration, and communication (student-to-student, teacher-to-student, and teacher-to-teacher.) These agile and adaptable classrooms easily convert into large group learning spaces, multiple small group collaboration areas, and a large town hall lecture room. This is supported by flexible furniture; moveable wall panels; clear sight lines; acoustic control; and, ideally located exterior windows that provide optimal interior layout and meaningful student views.
In concert with Barrie School’s enduring commitment to sustainability, both buildings were designed to achieve LEED Platinum and embrace nearly every definition of environmental stewardship, energy efficiency, increased eco-awareness and healthy interiors. Built from many post-consumer materials, these buildings incorporate cool roof technology, FSC Certified wood, rapidly renewable materials, occupancy sensors, energy efficient lighting, with cisterns irrigating an indigenous landscape.
