Tom Spies


Education, Higher Education, K-12 Education studio.

Tom has more than 35 years of educational planning and design in both the private and public sector. His experience includes serving as project director and principal-in-charge for a variety of educational assignments. His work in this area includes schools in eight states. A recognized expert in the field, Tom is a frequent speaker at national education design conferences and pioneered the theory of the “generational approach” to independent school design.

Throughout his comprehensive career, Mr. Spies has focused on designing spaces that enhance the learning and teaching experience. Every project is analyzed, programmed, and then tailored to accommodate the needs of its clients. His most recent article on education planning and design is “Creating a 21st Century Library,” New Assets, July/August Publication, 2011.

What was your first job?

Airplane mechanic at Ohio State University Airport (He wanted to be an astronaut).
